Scouts (12-15 years) and Ventures (15 – 17 years) meet on Friday nights in Taney Parish Hall from 8.00pm – 10.00pm
and participate in a range of outdoor activities including camping, kayaking, hiking, pioneering, rock climbing, raft building and mountain biking at different times throughout the year.
Scouts is a great opportunity for 12 – 15 year-old boys and girls to come together and learn new skills of teamwork, leadership and life skills. We always welcome new young people to our troop so please contact our Group Scout leader for more information. To enable us to give our scouts these new skills, we need more adult leaders as we are currently short of leaders. If you have a spare couple of hours on a Friday, this is a great opportunity to make friends and learn new outdoor skills.
The Scouts got off to a great start in 2019 with a friendly welcome for some new members and those who moved up from Cubs.Outdoor activities started with a weekend camp at Lough Dan, near Roundwood, featuring a hike along the Scarr ridge overlooking the lake.
Wet weather didn’t dampen spirits with the Scouts playing plenty of games, exploration of the campsite and meeting Scouts from other Groups camping nearby.Last week saw a group of Scouts and Leaders take on Lugnaquilla from Glenmalure for our Hiking challenge and we were rewarded with amazing weather and scenic views on the 15km hike. Thanks to Colin Orr for leading the hike and teaching the Scouts navigation skills.Indoor activities on Friday nights are focused on building skills that include Backwoods cooking and Pioneering in preparation for the annual County Cup next May as well as fun games to let off steam at the end of the week.
Ventures are a mixed gender youth lead section, aged 15 - 17, with Ventures planning and organising most of their own activities. To further support Ventures, the troop would welcome young Adult leaders, who would like to mentor the Venture group and participate in their outdoor activities. Scouting Ireland offers comprehensive training to leaders including Mountain Leader Training, Backwoods Skills, First Aid and other Adventure Skills training to those interested.
Ventures also had a busy start to the year and continue to be an invaluable asset to our troop, volunteering regularly with the Cub section to organise games and pass on their Scouting skills. Recently, Ventures joined the Scouts for a camp in Lough Dan and last week for a fantastic hike up Lugnaquilla from Glenmalure. Ventures are actively involved with other Groups in the Three Rock Scout County and one of our Ventures was elected to represent the County at the Provincial Forum. At a recent County event, Ventures built a pendulum to demonstrate how harmonic motion works (this is what your car shock absorbers are designed around). Ventures are currently planning an overnight hike at Crone Woods, near Djouce mountain.
